This Farm-to-School event will be hosted by Native Son Farm in Tupelo, MS. The Alliance is collaborating with the Mississippi Farm to School Network to conduct this workshop on farm to school practices followed by a mixer between farmers and school food service directors. This event will highlight the work of Native Son Farm; school food service needs; how farmers can serve the Farm to School market, and provide a networking opportunity for schools, farmers, and others. Schools are interested in locally grown food; local farmers are eager to grow and sell to them; everyone wants healthier food; and we want to help facilitate that process. Let’s work together to build even stronger relationships. YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS THIS ONE!
There are some outstanding sustainable farming operations in this region and participants will tour and learn from one of the best! Native Son Farm is a twenty-acre, multi-location farm run by Will and Amanda Reed. Breaking ground on a 3/4-acre garden in 2010, Will and Amanda began farming with the intention of building a community based around a naturally grown farm. With lots of hard work, perseverance, and help from friends and family, the vision has grown to include 20 acres on two locations feeding over 200 Mississippi families in 2015. Native Son Farm became certified Naturally Grown in 2011 to ensure to customers that their food is grown without the use of synthetic substances and in a manner that promotes soil health and natural methods of pest and weed control.
Native Son Farm was one of Mississippi’s first CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm, serving nearly 300 families in 2015. Their CSA is now the largest in the State. Their knowledge of sustainable vegetable production combined with a fantastic crew and continued investments in land, equipment and infrastructure allowed them to produce bountiful harvests of beautiful produce for their members. Their CSA members are the backbone of the farm, which also includes a farm stand and local farmers market sales. (SEE DIRECTIONS BELOW)
