August 19-20 - Annual Meeting
The 49th Annual Meeting of the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund will be held August, 19-20 in Epes, Alabama at its Rural Training and Research Center. The meeting will include exhibits, keynote speakers, USDA panel discussions, workshops, agri-tours and an update on the Hispanic and Women Farmers and Ranchers lawsuit settlement.
The Annual Meeting will be preceded on August 18 by the 15th annual Estelle Witherspoon Lifetime Achievement Award Dinner, at the Birmingham Sheraton Hotel. Mrs. Witherspoon was a leader and founder of the Freedom Quilting Bee in Alberta, Alabama who was renowned for service to her community. This year's honoree will be announced at a later date.
The Federation is a nonprofit, cooperative association organized by 22 grassroots cooperatives from across the South. Along with training, education and technical assistance to limited resourced farmers, ranchers and landowners, the Federation's work includes cooperative development, marketing, wills, estate plans and affordable housing.
Note: The Federation/LAF, now in its 49th year, assists Black family farmers across the South with farm management, debt restructuring, alternative crop suggestions, marketing expertise and a whole range of services to ensure family farm survivability.
