Good news! The Local Farms, Food, and Jobs Act, introduced on Nov. 1 by Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-ME-1), now has 53 House and 6 Senate co-sponsors. More co-sponsors are still needed to make a greater impact.
The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) is asking citizens to urge their Senators and Representatives to sign onto this bill. The more support that grows for this bill’s provisions, the greater likelihood that important pieces of this legislation will be put into the next Farm Bill.
This bill is for all Americans, rural and urban. It maintains funding for programs with proven track records in the next farm bill cycle. Most importantly, it boosts farm income and creates jobs.
To take action, here is what you can do:
Check the list of co-sponsors to see if your two Senators and one Representative are on the bill. If they are, thank them and ask them to talk to their fellow Members of Congress. If they are not, remind them of why this bill matters to you and to their State/district. Explicitly ask them if they are going to co-sponsor the bill.
Spread the word - call your friends, farmers, and local food advocates and ask them to make calls, too.
NSAC is especially targeting certain Senators and Representatives to show broad support for these issues. Below is a working list of some key targets they would like your help with. Remember, if your Senator or Representative is not on the target list below, you should still contact them - every person matters!
